Most people hit Shut down at the end of the day thinking their PC is getting a full reset.
A fair assumption.
On Windows 11, that’s not actually what happens — and it’s why choosing Restart is often the smarter move.
Shut Down Does Not Equal Full Shutdown
Windows 11 uses a feature called Fast Startup. It speeds up boot times by saving part of the system state before powering off.
That means when you turn your PC back on, it’s loading a saved session — not starting fresh.
Great for speed. Not great for fixing problems.
Why Restarting Is Better
A restart fully unloads Windows, clears drivers and memory, and reloads the operating system from scratch. This helps:
- Fix slowdowns and glitches
- Resolve odd app behaviour
- Refresh system processes
- Improve overall stability
